Terms of Service

Bytesight reads and removes metadata from images and documents on your own device, and can edit document properties. Use it to protect your privacy, not to locate or track other people. It's provided as-is, without guarantees.

1. Accepting these terms

By using Bytesight (“the Service”) you agree to these Terms of Service and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, don't use the Service.

2. What the Service does

The Service lets you:

  • view metadata stored inside an image, such as Exif, XMP, IPTC and embedded text;
  • see GPS coordinates recorded in an image, show them on a map, and look up the nearest address;
  • create a copy of the image with that metadata removed, or only the kinds you choose;
  • view the properties, comments, tracked changes and other hidden content of a document (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX or PDF), and the metadata of images embedded in it;
  • create a copy of the document with the metadata you choose removed, and with document properties you choose (such as author, company or title) changed to text you enter.

Files are processed in your browser and are never uploaded to our servers. The details are in our Privacy Policy.

3. Location information

This section applies to images, including images embedded in a document. The Service can only show location data that is already stored inside the image file, such as the GPS coordinates a phone camera records. It cannot find the location of an image that has no such data.

Image files don't contain IP addresses. The Service does not and cannot tell you the IP address of the person who took, sent or uploaded an image.

Location data comes from the device that created the file. It may be missing, inaccurate, or deliberately edited. An address from the “Find address” feature is only the nearest match on OpenStreetMap. The photo may have been taken nearby rather than at that address.

4. Acceptable use

You agree to use the Service lawfully and only on files you own or have the right to examine. You must not use the Service to:

  • locate, track, stalk, harass, threaten, or intimidate any person;
  • reveal someone's home, workplace or whereabouts without their consent (doxxing);
  • process files obtained unlawfully or in breach of someone else's privacy;
  • remove authorship or copyright information to claim someone else's work as your own or to disguise where a document came from;
  • alter documents that are evidence, official records, or documents that law or contract requires you to keep intact;
  • enter false authorship or other false information in a document's properties to mislead anyone about who wrote it, where it came from or when;
  • violate any applicable law, including personal data protection laws such as Indonesia's UU PDP or the EU GDPR;
  • send automated or bulk requests through the map or address features, or otherwise breach the usage policies of OpenStreetMap and Nominatim;
  • interfere with, reverse-engineer for abuse, or disrupt the Service.

You are solely responsible for the files you process and for how you use any information the Service shows you.

5. Metadata removal

The removal feature strips known metadata blocks and then re-reads the cleaned file to check the result. We can't guarantee that every possible form of hidden data is removed, especially proprietary or unusual formats.

Removal does not change what is visible in the image. Faces, street signs, landmarks, reflections, screens and documents in the picture can still reveal where it was taken or who is in it. Check the image itself before you share it.

When you choose to remove only some kinds of photo metadata, the Exif block is rewritten without them. XMP, IPTC, comment and text blocks can mix several kinds of data, so they are removed whenever anything is removed. Whatever you choose to keep stays in the copy.

For documents, also note:

  • Removing metadata is not redaction. The visible content stays as it is. A black box drawn over text in a PDF often only covers the text, which can still be selected and copied.
  • Tracked changes, hidden text, hidden sheets, rows and columns, hidden slides, speaker notes, links to outside files (other than a linked template, which is removed), PDF annotations, attachments, scripts and form fields are detected and reported but not removed.
  • Cleaning a file invalidates any digital signature. For Word, Excel and PowerPoint files the signature is removed; a PDF keeps a signature that no longer validates.
  • Properties you edit are written into the copy exactly as you typed them. You are responsible for what you enter. Editing doesn't change other places the same information may appear, such as tracked changes, comments you keep, or a PDF's XMP metadata if you keep it.
  • Document formats vary. Open the cleaned copy and check it before you share it.

The original file on your device, image or document, is never modified. A separate copy is created for you to download. Keep the original if you might need the metadata later.

6. Third-party services

The map preview and address lookup are optional. They only run when you click them and are provided by OpenStreetMap. When you use them, the coordinates and your device's standard request data (such as your IP address) are sent to those providers, and their own terms and policies apply. See the Nominatim usage policy and the OSMF privacy policy. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

7. Your content

You keep all rights to your images and documents. Because files stay on your device, we don't receive, store or license them.

8. No warranty

The Service is provided free of charge, “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied. This includes, but is not limited to, warranties of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don't guarantee that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free.

9. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Bytesight and its operators are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages. This includes loss of data and privacy harm resulting from metadata or hidden content in images or documents that was not detected or not removed, from your use of the Service, or from your use of information it shows you.

10. Changes

We may update these terms. The effective date at the top of this page shows when they last changed. Continuing to use the Service after a change means you accept the updated terms.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Indonesia.
